Hyderabad, April 16: Eight devotees were killed and 12 injured in a road accident in Kurnool district on April 16, 2026. The victims were travelling to Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mutt for darshan.
The accident occurred near Chilakaladona in Mantralayam. The vehicle collided with a ready mix lorry coming from the opposite direction. Police rushed to the spot and began rescue operations.
Five people died on the spot. Three others later succumbed to injuries at hospital. The injured were shifted to hospitals in Yemmiganur and Kurnool.
The victims were from Chikmagalur in Karnataka. They were travelling for a pilgrimage when the accident occurred around 3.30 am.
N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over the incident. He reviewed the situation with officials and directed them to ensure proper treatment for the injured.

Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy also conveyed condolences. He urged authorities to provide the best medical care.
Officials said some critically injured persons were shifted to Kurnool Government General Hospital. Others are undergoing treatment at the Area Hospital.
Authorities have started an investigation into the cause of the accident. Meanwhile, travellers were advised to follow road safety norms to prevent such incidents.
