New Delhi, May 29: The Supreme Court on Friday questioned the National Testing Agency (NTA) over the NEET paper leak case and advised it to learn from the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which conducts civil services examinations without such controversies.
The apex court raised concerns over how the NEET question paper was leaked despite multiple surveillance systems and monitoring committees being in place.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared on behalf of the NTA during the hearing. Former ISRO chief K. Radhakrishnan, who heads the high level committee formed to reform the NEET examination system, was also present.
Justice Justice Narasimha questioned officials about the circumstances that led to the paper leak. The court examined affidavits submitted by the NTA and the expert committee.
Supreme Court Questions NTA Over NEET Leak
During the hearing, Justice Narasimha asked how the leak occurred despite safeguards introduced over the years.
Responding to the court, Dr. Radhakrishnan said problems emerged during the paper setting process. He added that the loopholes had now been identified and corrective steps were taken.
He informed the court that 101 instructions had earlier been prepared for smooth examination conduct. Out of them, 60 temporary measures were specially designed for the 2025 and 2026 examinations.
The Supreme Court observed that reforms alone would not improve the situation. The bench stressed the need to fix accountability whenever lapses occur.
The court remarked that forming committees and conducting meetings without identifying responsibility would not solve the issue.
Meanwhile, Tushar Mehta informed the court that the investigation into the paper leak was continuing. He said additional safeguards had been introduced for the examination scheduled on June 21.
Mehta also stated that the Central government was treating the matter seriously and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was personally monitoring developments related to the NEET examination system.
