Modi Govt Signals Move Towards UCC, Sparks Nationwide Concern Among Muslims

Hyderabad, April 25 (Maxim News): The BJP has reignited the debate over the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) with a recent video posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account. The video, which ends with the phrase “Uniform Civil Code Loading…”, signals the government’s intent to push for UCC legislation during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament in June. This move is seen as a step towards fulfilling one of the BJP’s key promises in its election manifesto.

The UCC aims to replace personal laws based on religious scriptures with a common set of laws that apply to all citizens, regardless of religion, community, or gender.

The video has sparked significant concern among Muslim leaders and organizations, many of whom view the UCC as an attempt to undermine Islamic personal laws. Laws such as the Shariat Application Act of 1937, which govern matters like marriage, divorce, and inheritance, are seen as constitutionally protected and an integral part of the Muslim community’s way of life.

A Hyderabad-based cleric, during a protest rally, expressed fears that this was part of a broader agenda to erode Muslim personal and religious freedoms. “They started with Triple Talaq, then came the CAA and NRC, and now the Uniform Civil Code. Where does it end?” he asked.

Critics argue that the push for the UCC is part of a broader series of legislative moves by the BJP that disproportionately affect the Muslim community. These moves include the Triple Talaq law, the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC), and amendments to Waqf laws. Many critics believe the timing of this latest push is politically motivated, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anticipated third term and crucial state elections, including those in Maharashtra, approaching.

The proposal for a Uniform Civil Code is already facing significant legal scrutiny. Constitutional experts argue that attempting to enforce a uniform set of civil laws without broad-based consultation could violate India’s secular framework. Opposition leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have condemned the move, calling it “divisive politics.” Civil rights groups and minority organizations have also warned that rushing the UCC’s implementation without public consensus could deepen social divides.

While no official draft of the UCC has been released, insiders suggest that the government may introduce the bill during the Monsoon Session, with discussions expected soon thereafter.
