Myanmar Hit by Back-to-Back Earthquakes: Over 1,600 Dead
Myanmar/Internet/Hyderabad, March 30 (Maxim News): Myanmar continues to be shaken by relentless earthquakes, with the country experiencing two major tremors in just two days. While people were still reeling from the massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake on Friday, another 5.1-magnitude tremor struck on Sunday afternoon, adding to the panic and devastation.
Devastation from Friday’s Earthquake
The powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar on Friday has caused severe destruction:
- 1,644 people have lost their lives.
- 3,408 people have been seriously injured.
- Hundreds of buildings have collapsed, trapping many under the rubble.
- Roads, electricity, and communication systems have been severely damaged, making relief efforts difficult.

Rescue Operations and Growing Fears
The Myanmar government has launched rescue operations, but the relief efforts have been slow due to widespread destruction. The situation is even more critical in mountainous regions, where aid is yet to reach. Officials fear the death toll could rise further as many people are still missing.
The second earthquake on Sunday has deepened fears among the people, who are already struggling to recover from Friday’s disaster.
Rising Prices and Power Shortages
The disaster has triggered a sharp rise in essential commodity prices:
- Power cuts have led to a surge in demand for candles, with the price of a pack of 10 candles jumping from ₹250 to ₹450.
- The Yangon Electricity Corporation has announced power supply will be limited to just four hours a day.
- Food prices have skyrocketed, adding to the difficulties faced by the survivors.
International Aid and India’s Assistance
Many countries have stepped in to support Myanmar and Thailand, which have both been devastated by the earthquake. India has launched ‘Operation Brahma’, providing emergency assistance and relief materials to the affected regions.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, but with continued aftershocks and delayed aid in some areas, Myanmar remains in a state of crisis. (Maxim News)
