National Science Day 2023, National Science Convention, Department of Genetics -4th March 2023

The Department of Genetics organized – the National Science Convention on “Impact of Genetics and Biotechnology research on society” on account of National Science Day (NSD)- 2023 on 4th March in collaboration with the National Council of Science and Technology (NCSTC) and Telangana State Council of Science and Technology (TSCOST). The inaugural ceremony was held by Prof. H. Surekha Rani, Convener of the event and head of the Department of Genetics, and Dr. Someswar R. Sagurthi, Coordinator of the program in which the Chief Guest, Prof. G. Mallesham, Dean, of Development and UGC Affairs, OU addressed the gathering about the importance of socially relevant research activities as well as mentioned about the support schemes by the University at all levels for education and basic research. On this occasion, the faculty of genetics and biotechnology from the department, as well as CPMB, have felicitated Prof. K.V. Rao, an Eminent scientist, at CPMB for his outstanding contributions to Science. Also, Dr. Sharath Chandra from TIFR, Bombay was invited as a guest of honor who was an alumnus of Osmania university. He inspired the participants to conduct impactful research.

The program mainly focused on the latest developments in Genetics and Biotechnology and provides an interactive platform for students and researchers from different arenas of life sciences. Eminent speakers invited were Prof. K. V. Rao, FNAS, NASI Scientist from CPMB, Osmania University, Dr. Parul Mishra from the University of Hyderabad, Dr. Rajakumara Eerappa from IIT Hyderabad and Dr. N. Srikanth from Syngene International Bangalore who delivered talks on various aspects covering genetically modified crops for food security, structure-function dynamics of proteins via deep mutational scans, tuning enzyme activities and drug design, and how CRISPR can revolutionize life. Around 118 delegates from 16 UG and PG colleges in the state and delegates from IICT participated in the event. There were 33 poster presentations, 16 oral presentations, and 13 review article presentations by the delegates.

The program concluded with a valedictory session with Prof. B. Veeriah, Principal, University College of Science, OU as chief guest. Certificates were given to all the participants of the program. A total of 15 cash prizes were awarded to the contestants in various categories. The faculty from the department of genetics- Prof. A. Roja Rani, Prof. Smita C Pawar, Dr. Sumanlatha, Dr. A. Sandhya, Dr. A. Srinivas, Dr. Prashant Singam, Dr. G.Vijay Kumar contributed for the successful organization of the program. Also, faculty from CPMB- Dr.K. Srinivas Naik, Dr. K. Rama Krishna, Director, and Dr. T. Layanya actively involved in the event. Dr. Sandeepta, Head, of Dept and microbiology, Dr. Hameeda Bee, Dr. Amanchi Nageswar Rao, Dr. V. Sugunakar, Dr. Raju Padiya, and Dr. Sambha Shiva from Nizams College, have attended the program. The financial support for this event was received by Dr. Someswar Rao from the Dean, of Development and UGC affairs, Principal, college of science, Osmania university, and TSCOST.
