Hyderabad: The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal and China has risen to 750, while more than 3,000 people remain missing as rescue operations entered their fifth day on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
Nepal’s disaster authority said 734 people have died and 2,498 remain missing following torrential flooding across several areas. The number of missing people increased from 2,426 reported on Saturday evening.
Nepal Flash Floods Leave Thousands Missing
The missing list in Nepal includes 589 foreigners, up from 517 previously reported as out of contact. It also includes 933 workers employed at hydropower projects along the river system affected by the floods.
Meanwhile, Chinese state media reported 16 deaths and 546 missing people in Tibet, taking the combined death toll from the disaster in Nepal and China to 750.
Rescue teams have been working to locate survivors and provide assistance to communities affected by the floods. However, difficult terrain and widespread destruction have complicated rescue and relief operations.
Nepal’s Foreign Minister and the United Nations climate chief have also warned about the growing risks facing the Himalayan region due to climate change.
The disaster has renewed concerns over the vulnerability of Himalayan communities to extreme weather events, particularly as torrential rainfall and rapidly changing environmental conditions increase the risk of flash floods and other disasters.
Authorities in Nepal and China continue to assess the scale of the destruction as rescue operations and efforts to locate missing people remain underway.
