New Delhi, July 21: Central security agencies have identified a growing trend of online radicalisation in South India, with operatives allegedly linked to Al Qaeda and the Islamic State increasingly promoting extremist ideologies through parallel networks.
According to officials, recent investigations by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) indicate that the two globally recognised terror organisations are focusing on online recruitment and radicalisation despite their longstanding rivalry.
Agencies Monitor Online Radicalisation Networks
Officials said the alleged radicalisation efforts have primarily targeted Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh, while also extending to parts of Maharashtra.
An Intelligence Bureau official, quoted in reports, said the two organisations appear to be pursuing similar ideological objectives despite operating under different banners.
According to investigators, recent cases have revealed the presence of propaganda material linked to both organisations.
In one such case, Andhra Pradesh Police registered a case against an individual identified as Rehmatullah Sharif. During the investigation, officials reportedly seized material allegedly linked to both the Islamic State and Al Qaeda.
Investigators said the case forms part of broader efforts to monitor online extremist activity and prevent the radicalisation of vulnerable individuals.
Security agencies continue to investigate the networks and their methods of spreading extremist propaganda through digital platforms.
