New Delhi, August 7: Eligible students can apply for the National Means cum Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the 2026–27 academic year until August 31, 2026. Fresh and renewal applications must be submitted through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).
The Department of School Education and Literacy under the Union Ministry of Education has advised students to complete the application process well before the deadline to avoid last minute issues.
NMMSS Verification and Eligibility Details
Applications under the National Means cum Merit Scholarship Scheme will undergo a two stage verification process.
The Level 1 (L1) verification will be carried out by the Institute Nodal Officer (INO) and must be completed by September 15, 2026.
The Level 2 (L2) verification will be conducted by the District Nodal Officer (DNO), with the final verification deadline set for September 30, 2026.
From the 2026–27 academic year, students are allowed to apply for one merit based scholarship scheme along with one or more welfare based scholarship schemes, provided they meet the eligibility criteria for each programme.
The National Means cum Merit Scholarship Scheme aims to support meritorious students from economically weaker sections and reduce school dropouts after Class VIII.
Under the scheme, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded every year to eligible students studying in Class IX. The scholarship is renewable for Classes X to XII, subject to prescribed conditions, for students enrolled in State government, government aided and local body schools.
The Ministry of Education has also directed Institute and District Nodal Officers to complete application verification within the prescribed timelines to ensure timely processing and scholarship disbursal.
