New Delhi, September 5: President Droupadi Murmu will confer the National Teachers Awards 2026 on 48 school teachers at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on Saturday, as India observes Teachers’ Day.
The award ceremony is organised annually by the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Ministry of Education to recognise outstanding contributions to school education.
Short documentaries highlighting the work and achievements of each awardee will also be screened during the ceremony. The films will showcase their teaching practices, innovations and contributions to students.
48 Teachers Selected Through Three-Stage Process
The awardees were selected through a rigorous, transparent and online selection process conducted at the district, state and national levels.
For the 2026 awards, eligible teachers submitted self-nominations through the Ministry of Education’s online portal. The nomination process was open from June 15 to July 20.
The 48 selected teachers represent 27 States, seven Union Territories and six Central Government organisations. The group includes 26 male and 22 female teachers.
The National Teachers Awards recognise educators who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to teaching and contributed to better learning environments and improved educational outcomes.
The awards also seek to encourage innovation, dedication and excellence in teaching, while highlighting the broader impact educators have on the lives of their students.
Meanwhile, separate Teacher Award ceremonies are being held in several states.
In Himachal Pradesh, 26 teachers will receive State Teacher Awards for their contributions to education and student development. The recipients include 21 school teachers and five college teachers.
In Uttar Pradesh, 81 teachers will receive the State Teacher Award and Chief Minister’s Teacher Award from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at the Yogiraj Baba Gambhirnath Auditorium in Gorakhpur.
The Uttar Pradesh awardees include 61 teachers from the Basic Education Department and 20 from the Secondary Education Department.
The ceremonies across the country are being held to recognise teachers whose sustained efforts have helped strengthen education and shape the future of students.
