Delhi/Hyderabad, Sept 15 (Maxim News): Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has criticised the Narendra Modi government over its latest policy changes concerning Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions, alleging that the Centre has created a pathway for introducing charges on certain payments.
Gandhi claimed that Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) could now be imposed on merchant UPI transactions exceeding ₹2,000, arguing that even a relatively small share of such transactions represents a significant portion of UPI’s overall transaction value.
“The Modi government has quietly opened the door to imposing fees on UPI,” Gandhi said in a post on X. He alleged that transactions above ₹2,000 could eventually attract MDR and argued that the cost could ultimately be passed on to consumers through higher prices.
What The Government’s New UPI Rules Say The Centre has directed banks and payment system providers not to levy charges on UPI transactions of up to ₹2,000 or on payments made through RuPay debit cards. (Maxim News)
