New Delhi, July 19: Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking an independent investigation into the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ayodhya Ram Temple. They said lakhs of devotees who donated with faith now feel “betrayed by the theft.”
In a joint letter dated July 18, the Leaders of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha urged the Prime Minister to ensure accountability and order a comprehensive probe into the financial affairs of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.
Kharge shared the letter on X and said devotees who contributed their hard earned money deserve transparency and justice.

The Congress leaders noted that the Trust was announced by the Prime Minister in Parliament following the Supreme Court’s directions. They alleged that its members were appointed by the Centre and are associated with organisations including the RSS and VHP.
They said the Prime Minister’s silence on the issue was unacceptable and urged the government to make the Trust’s financial records public, including details of cash, gold and silver donations.
The leaders also demanded that everyone found responsible should face action, regardless of their position or influence.
The controversy surfaced in early June after allegations of theft of donations at the Ram Temple. Police registered an FIR on June 25 based on a complaint filed by the Trust. So far, eight people have been arrested and two senior Trust functionaries have resigned.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also urged the Prime Minister to respond to the allegations. Sharing the letter on X, he said the government must ensure transparency and accountability in the management of devotees’ contributions.
