Hyderabad, April 18: Revanth Reddy remarks on Women’s Reservation Bill sparked controversy after a statement welcomed the defeat of the legislation. The remarks drew criticism from political circles and observers soon after they were released.
The Chief Minister thanked several opposition leaders for their united stand. He mentioned leaders including M K Stalin, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray among others.
He also acknowledged Lalu Prasad Yadav, Hemant Soren, Farooq Abdullah, Naveen Patnaik and Arvind Kejriwal for opposing the bills.
Clarification issued after backlash on Women’s Reservation Bill
Revanth Reddy remarks on Women’s Reservation Bill later faced criticism over the tone of the statement. Critics questioned the appropriateness of celebrating the defeat of a bill linked to women’s representation.
Following the backlash, the Chief Minister’s Office withdrew the initial statement. It then issued a clarification stating that the reference was to the defeat of the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill, not the Women’s Reservation Bill.
Meanwhile, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy welcomed the development. He said the outcome reflected the strength of democratic unity against contested legislation.
The developments come amid ongoing debates over the Women’s Reservation Bill and related constitutional proposals in Parliament.
