Hyderabad, Aug 10 (Maxim News): Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) has said artificial intelligence could become a new religion and replace many existing faith systems.
Varma made the remarks while sharing his views on the future of AI and human society. He argued that AI could gain an influence far beyond its current role in technology.
According to Varma, this shift could happen when AI reaches Artificial General Intelligence and Artificial Superintelligence. He described the possibility as a major change in how humans understand authority, knowledge and reality.
He said existing religions largely rely on belief in an unseen power and a set of rules. People may follow those rules with the promise of heaven or the fear of hell.
However, Varma said AI would work in a very different way. He suggested that AI could become a visible and constantly accessible force through screens, devices and communication systems.
RGV predicts AI could replace traditional faith
Varma argued that people may not be able to question or avoid AI in the same way they can question religion. He said future systems could become deeply connected with essential services and everyday decisions.
He also suggested that advanced AI could identify future crises before humans detect them. Such systems could also adapt rules and processes faster than people can respond, he claimed.
According to Varma, AI would not punish people through a traditional concept of hell. Instead, people unable to compete with advanced AI could gradually become irrelevant to society.
He further argued that traditional concepts of atheism and scepticism could face a new challenge. Humans can reject religious beliefs today, he said, but dependence on AI could make complete rejection much harder.
Varma also compared the possible impact of advanced AI with major developments in history. He referred to the printing press, the rise of modern science and the development of nuclear weapons.
He said each development weakened an earlier form of authority or changed how societies understood power. In his view, Artificial Superintelligence could create an even greater transformation because of its potential intellectual capabilities.
Varma suggested that the key future question may not be whether people believe in God. Instead, he said people could face a question about whether they accept answers from an intelligence that understands reality better than they do.
He concluded that humanity could face two broad choices in such a future. People could follow advanced AI systems or risk becoming insignificant as those systems reshape society.
Varma’s comments represent his personal philosophical view about the future of AI. They do not describe an established scientific prediction or consensus among AI researchers.
