School Closed Due To Hijab Controversy

Kochi/Hyderabad, Oct 14 (Maxim News): A two day holiday was declared by the management of a private school run by a Christian management in Palluruthy, Kochi, after a dispute with the parents of a Class 8 student of the school over her wearing a hijab.

The parents of the student were supported by the pro-islamist political party Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), and the party’s members misbehaved with the school authorities, who are mostly Christian nns, a school PTA official alleged.

The SDPI is yet to respond to these allegations. The controversy came to light after a letter released by St. Rita’s Public School Principal Sister Helena RC went viral on social media. In this letter, it was stated that the school had declared holidays on Monday and Tuesday. The principal stated in the letter that a student who came without the prescribed uniform and her parents.

Some students and staff who faced mental stress due to pressure from people not related to the school had requested a holiday. After consulting with the executive members of the parent Teacher Association, it was decided to declare holidays on october 13 and 14. ‘We aim to provide quality education in accordance with the freedom guaranteed by the country and the rights of school owners. We expect your continued cooperation’, it was stated in the letter.

PTA member Joshi Kaithvalappil said that the school has been following the same dress code for 30 years and students from all sections have followed it. “However, the parents of one student insisted that she be sent with a dupatta on her head.

Recently, they came to the school with a group and created a ruckus, creating panic among the students and teachers. That is why we have decided to declare a two-day holiday,” he explained. Kaithvalappil said that the school management had approached the Kerala High Court for police protection and got a favourable order.

“The people who came to the school claimed to be from SDPI and did not behave properly with the sisters,” he alleged. Meanwhile, the student’s father told the media that his daughter had joined the school from this academic year. “The school management is saying that wearing a dupatta on her head will affect equality.

Earlier, they used to ask her to remove her dupatta inthe classroom. But now they have started objecting even at the school gazte,” he said, complaining to the District education Officer and the concerned minister about this. “If they do not allow her to cover her head with a dupatta, we will admit our daughter to another school,” he clarified.
