Sedition Law: IJU welcomes suspension

Sedition Law | The Indian Journalist Union welcomed the suspension of sedition law by the Supreme Court.

In a statement issued on Thursday, IJU president K. Sreenivas Reddy and secretary general Balwinder Singh Jammu reminded that many journalists, who were critical of the ruling political dispensation were jailed under 124A of IPC despite the limitation prescribed by the Apex Court in 1962. Criminalising free speech is untenable in democracies, they averred.

The fact that some 13,000 persons are in jail under 124A is hard evidence to the rampant misuse of the British era law.

The IJU leaders hoped that as the government has expressed its intention to revisit the colonial era law it would soon be consigned to history books.
