Sharjeel Imam Interim Bail | New Delhi / Hyderabad, Oct 10: Delhi Police have approached a court seeking cancellation of the interim bail granted to former JNU student Sharjeel Imam, an accused in the larger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 northeast Delhi riots. Police alleged in their petition that he violated the conditions of his bail.
An additional sessions judge at Karkardooma Court had granted Imam conditional interim bail for one week, from October 4 to 10. The relief was granted so that he could attend the wedding celebrations of his cousins.
According to the police, the court had clearly directed him not to use social media or speak to any media representatives while on bail. The police alleged that Imam ignored these directions. They told the court that visuals of him speaking to media persons during the interim bail period are circulating on social media.

Police alleged that Imam deliberately violated the bail conditions instead of making proper use of the liberty the court had given him.
They objected strongly, saying this amounted to disregarding the conditions the court had imposed. Accusing him of misusing the legal relief, the police asked the court to cancel his interim bail immediately.
Imam was arrested under sedition charges and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the anti-CAA agitation and has remained in jail for a long time. The court has yet to decide on the police petition.
