SIR Finds 12 Nepali Nationals On Hyderabad Voter List

Hyderabad, Nov. 4: The ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the Tri Corporations area has reportedly identified foreign nationals registered as voters in parts of Hyderabad and surrounding districts.

During the verification drive, officials reportedly found 12 Nepali nationals registered at a single polling booth in the Sanathnagar Assembly constituency. They allegedly failed to provide proof of Indian citizenship when questioned.

According to the report, the individuals said they had entered India legally because Nepali citizens do not require visas. However, officials said they could produce only Nepalese documents.

The report also mentions suspected Rohingya voters in an Assembly constituency in Rangareddy district. Authorities are examining their voter registration status and citizenship documents.

SIR Verification Covers 12.53 Lakh Voters

District Election Officer and GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan earlier said officials had issued notices to around 12.53 lakh voters across 15 Assembly constituencies in Hyderabad district.

Most of the verification has reportedly been completed. However, around 5,000 to 6,000 voters have not responded to notices despite several months.

Officials believe some voters who moved to Hyderabad for education, employment and business may have retained registrations in their native villages. The report estimates that such migrants account for around 30 to 40 percent of the cases under examination.

Meanwhile, election officials have rejected allegations that the SIR exercise aims to remove genuine voters. They said the notices seek to verify voter eligibility and that names will remain on the final list when voters submit valid documents.

The Election Commission is preparing to publish the final electoral roll on November 30, according to the report.
