Skyroot’s Vikram-1 Mission Hailed By TDB As Milestone For India’s Private Space Sector

New Delhi, July 19: The Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has congratulated Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace on the successful Vikram-1 mission, describing it as a landmark achievement for India’s private space sector and a major boost to indigenous space technology.

The Board said the successful Vikram-1 mission marks a watershed moment for India’s commercial space industry. It added that the achievement demonstrates the country’s growing strength in deep-tech innovation and reinforces India’s position as an emerging global hub for indigenous space technologies.

The TDB said the achievement reflects its long-standing commitment to supporting home-grown technologies with strong commercial potential.

The Board recalled that it recognised Skyroot Aerospace early in its journey by presenting the National Technology Start-up Award 2022 during National Technology Day celebrations.

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh presented the award in recognition of the company’s work on indigenous cryogenic, liquid and solid propulsion technologies for the small satellite launch market.

According to the Board, the award acknowledged both Skyroot’s technological capabilities and commercial potential. It said the successful Vikram-1 mission validates the vision behind the National Technology Awards, which encourage breakthrough Indian innovations with national and global impact.

TDB Secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak said Skyroot’s progress from an emerging start-up to achieving India’s first successful private orbital launch reflects the strength of the country’s innovation ecosystem.

He also said Skyroot Aerospace has submitted a proposal to the Technology Development Board under the Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund, which is currently under consideration.

The Board added that it continues to support the commercialisation of indigenous technologies across strategic sectors, including aerospace, defence, healthcare, clean energy, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing and digital technologies.
