- Innovative rural attendance solution earns national-level SIH win
KL Deemed to be University has emerged as a national-level winner at the Smart India Hackathon 2025, securing a cash prize of ₹1.5 lakh. The achievement came after the university’s student team presented an innovative solution to a government problem statement focused on low-cost classroom attendance systems for rural areas. The victory once again placed KL Deemed to be University in the national spotlight for student-driven innovation.
The Smart India Hackathon 2025 national finale took place at Chandigarh Engineering College, Landran, in Chandigarh, Punjab. During the final round, the KL Deemed to be University team outperformed more than 500 teams from across the country. The problem statement, titled “Low Cost Automated Classroom Attendance for Rural Areas,” was proposed by the Government of Punjab. The judges selected the KL team’s solution as the best at the national level.

The winning team represented the KL GNU Linux Users Group at KL Deemed to be University. The team included B.Tech students P. Vamsi Krishna, Varun Sharma, V. Jashwanth, Madhuhan Shekhar, Ankita Behera, and Prabhsirat Kaur from the IRD department. Dr. Sripath Roy Koganti mentored the students throughout the hackathon process. Meanwhile, the university had a strong presence at the national stage, with six teams qualifying for the finals. Five teams came from the Vijayawada campus, while one team represented the Hyderabad campus.
The award-winning solution used a hybrid RFID and face-recognition system. The system aimed to reduce attendance time and improve teaching efficiency in rural schools. It also supported data-driven Mid-Day Meal planning, offered role-based mobile applications and dashboards, and sent SMS alerts to parents. The team designed the solution as a low-cost and scalable model suitable for large-scale government adoption.
Earlier, the same team developed “KL EATS,” a pre-order food solution for university canteens that saw wide student use. This experience helped sharpen their practical skills. Later, university leaders congratulated the students and mentor for the achievement. This win marked KL Deemed to be University’s second national-level Smart India Hackathon victory, following its earlier success at SIH 2022.
