LPG Shortage Raises Firewood Demand In Hyderabad

  • LPG shortage pushes firewood demand in Hyderabad markets
  • LPG shortage leads to firewood price increase in city depots

A growing LPG shortage in Hyderabad has led to higher demand for firewood across the city. As supplies of LPG for non domestic use remain limited, several businesses have turned to firewood as an alternative fuel. As a result, both the demand and price of firewood have increased slightly.

There are around 250 firewood depots operating in Hyderabad. These depots sell varieties such as Imli or tamarind, Babool or Acacia, Neem and Gairi. All these are non teak varieties used mainly as fuel. Restaurants, bakeries, small scale industries and caterers regularly buy firewood from these depots for their daily operations.

However, the situation has changed due to the shortage of LPG. With limited supply for non domestic purposes, many establishments are now depending more on firewood. This shift has pushed up demand in local markets. Therefore, depot owners say they are facing increased pressure to supply firewood.

A firewood depot owner at Chaderghat explained the situation. He said, “In present circumstances due to short supply of LPG for non-domestic purposes the demand for firewood has gone up. There is a price hike of Rs. 2 per kg,”. He added that suppliers are also raising prices, which has forced retailers to increase their rates.

Another depot owner also described the situation faced by sellers. He said, “We are charging Rs. 1 per kg more to regular customers. The price hike is inevitable as the suppliers are demanding a higher price from us,”. At present, the price of firewood in the city stands at Rs. 10 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, businesses that rely on continuous cooking operations are taking extra steps to secure fuel supplies. Big hotels, industries and caterers have contacted main firewood dealers directly. In some cases, they have even paid money in advance to ensure regular supply.

Firewood reaching Hyderabad mainly comes from nearby forest areas. These include Nalgonda, Adilabad, Mahabubnagar, Ranga Reddy, Warangal and even Kurnool. Suppliers transport the wood to the city using trucks, and each truck usually carries about 15 tonnes of logs.

The current LPG shortage has therefore created a noticeable shift in fuel demand within the city. As businesses try to keep their kitchens running without interruption, the reliance on firewood has increased, which has also pushed prices upward in Hyderabad markets.
