Hyderabad, May 20: The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the Centre’s decision to conduct a caste census and dismissed a public interest litigation challenging caste enumeration in the national census process.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice Justice Suryakant observed that the caste census falls within the domain of government policy and courts cannot interfere in such decisions.
The Bench clarified that collecting caste related data is important for the effective implementation of welfare schemes and for understanding the population of backward classes in the country.
Supreme Court Verdict on Caste Census
The Bench stated that whether the census should include caste based enumeration is a policy matter to be decided by the government.

The petition had sought exclusion of caste details from the census exercise. However, the court rejected the plea and ruled that judicial intervention was not required in the matter.
The case was heard by a Bench comprising Chief Justice Justice Suryakant, Justice Jayamalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul Pancholi.
