Supreme Court Seeks Centre, NTA Response On NEET Reforms

New Delhi, July 24: The Supreme Court has directed the Central Government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) to file a comprehensive affidavit detailing the institutional reforms being implemented following the alleged NEET UG paper leak.

The court said it wanted details of long-term structural reforms rather than temporary measures adopted for conducting the examination.

A bench of the Supreme Court directed the Centre and the NTA to submit a status report covering 10 key areas related to examination transparency, security and governance.

The report is expected to include details on digital infrastructure, security protocols, governance mechanisms, transparency, research, human resources and reforms undertaken before, during and after the examination process.

During the hearing, Justice P.S. Narasimha observed that the use of the Indian Air Force (IAF) for transporting examination papers was only a temporary arrangement and could not be considered a permanent solution to examination security.

The court also sought details on the proposed implementation of Computer Based Tests (CBT), measures to protect candidates’ data, and the possible use of technologies such as DigiYatra for candidate verification.

The Supreme Court further directed the Centre to explain the proposed governance framework for conducting national examinations, including the establishment of a governing board, expert committees and stakeholder participation in examination oversight.

Appearing for the Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the court that a fresh and comprehensive affidavit addressing all the issues raised would be filed shortly.

The bench stated that it would continue to monitor the implementation of reforms in national examinations such as NEET and adjourned the matter for further hearing until next Monday.
