Telangana and AP Changes Milad-un-Nabi Holiday To August 26

Amaravathi/Hyderabad, Aug 20: The Andhra Pradesh government has changed the Milad-un-Nabi holiday from August 25 to August 26, 2026. The state issued official orders after considering a request from Muslim religious leaders and the sighting of the new moon.
The revised order applies to the public holiday announced earlier for Milad-un-Nabi. The government had initially listed August 25 as the holiday in the academic calendar. However, the date has now been revised based on the religious calendar and the new moon sighting.

The change means government offices and educational institutions in Andhra Pradesh will observe the Milad-un-Nabi holiday on Wednesday, August 26. The state government has directed departments to follow the revised holiday schedule.

The decision follows consultations with Muslim religious representatives. The government considered their request while finalising the revised date. Therefore, the earlier date of August 25 will no longer apply as the public holiday for the festival.

Telangana also fixes Milad-un-Nabi holiday on August 26

Telangana has also fixed August 26 as the public holiday for Milad-un-Nabi. As a result, both Telugu states will observe the festival holiday on the same day this year.

The simultaneous holiday in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana will provide clarity to government employees, students and institutions across the two states. It will also avoid confusion caused by the earlier holiday date listed in the academic calendar.

The Milad-un-Nabi holiday is observed on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. The date follows the Islamic lunar calendar and can vary each year in the Gregorian calendar.

In Andhra Pradesh, the latest government order formally updates the earlier holiday notification. The revised date will therefore apply to government offices and institutions covered under the state holiday schedule.

Meanwhile, educational institutions that follow the state academic calendar will need to take note of the change. Authorities are expected to follow the revised date while planning academic and administrative activities.

The date change also highlights the role of lunar observations in determining several Islamic festivals. The final dates can differ from the dates initially listed in annual government calendars.

For now, August 26 remains the designated public holiday for Milad-un-Nabi in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Government departments, schools and other institutions covered by the holiday orders will observe the revised schedule accordingly.

The latest decision gives employees and institutions advance clarity about the holiday. It also ensures that the official government calendar reflects the revised festival date. (Maxim News)
