As per the revised rules, employees (excluding those in shops) can now work up to 10 hours per day. However, the total number of working hours must not exceed 48 hours in a week, ensuring compliance with labor welfare standards.

Key Changes to Employee Work Schedule

According to the notification issued by Principal Secretary of the State Labor Department, M. Danakrishore, the new regulations are designed to strike a balance between operational needs and employee well-being.

Highlights of the new working hour guidelines:

  • Daily Work Limit: Employees can work up to 10 hours per day.
  • Weekly Cap: 48 hours per week remains the maximum.
  • Break Time: A 30-minute break is mandatory after six hours of continuous work.
  • Overtime Rule: In special circumstances, an employee may work up to 12 hours a day, including overtime.
  • Quarterly Overtime Cap: Overtime should not exceed 144 hours in a quarter.
  • Non-Compliance Penalty: Enterprises violating these norms will face cancellation of government subsidies and exemptions without prior notice.

Ensuring Fair Labor Standards

The move is part of the government’s broader effort to support businesses while safeguarding workers’ rights. These changes provide greater scheduling flexibility for employers, especially in sectors where extended hours are occasionally necessary, while still ensuring workers are protected under regulated labor norms.
