Hyderabad: The Congress has announced its candidates for two upcoming Graduate MLC elections in Telangana. The party has fielded Sama Rammohan Reddy from the Mahabubnagar-Rangareddy-Hyderabad Graduates’ constituency and Ramreddy Sarvotham Reddy from the Nalgonda-Khammam-Warangal Graduates’ constituency.
The candidates were approved by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, according to an announcement issued by AICC general secretary KC Venugopal. The two seats are due to fall vacant in March 2027.
Sama Rammohan Reddy has been associated with the Congress for several years and has served as a TPCC spokesperson and in the party’s media and communications wing. Ramreddy Sarvotham Reddy is the son of former minister and senior Congress leader Ramreddy Damodar Reddy.
The Congress decision has also triggered a debate over social representation. Telangana Rakshana Sena president Kalvakuntla Kavitha questioned the party’s choice of two candidates from the same community.
“Two Graduate MLC seats and tickets for Reddy leaders in both places. Is this not social injustice?” Kavitha said in a social media post.
Graduate MLC Polls Spark Representation Debate
Kavitha said political parties have a responsibility to provide representation to different sections of society. She also criticised what she described as giving greater importance to one community in the candidate selection.
The issue of social representation had already featured in discussions around the Congress candidates. Reports before the final announcement said the party was considering several names for both constituencies, including candidates from different social backgrounds.
The voter enrolment process for the two Graduate MLC constituencies began on September 28. The final electoral rolls are scheduled to be published on December 30, according to Telangana Today.
The two constituencies are currently represented by Surabhi Vani Devi and Chintapandu Naveen, popularly known as Teenmar Mallanna. Their terms are scheduled to end in March 2027.
