Hyderabad, Sept. 9: TGSRTC’s new night bus services in Greater Hyderabad drew 9,286 passengers in their first seven days.
Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar shared the figures on Tuesday. He said the late night or third shift services received a good response from commuters.
TGSRTC launched the services on September 1. The corporation introduced them on six major routes across Greater Hyderabad.
The move followed requests from passengers for public transport during late night hours. It also addressed the travel needs of employees, students and other commuters.
Prabhakar said commuters welcomed the availability of public transport at night. He said the services offer a safer and more convenient travel option.
The first week’s passenger count has also prompted requests for wider coverage. According to the minister, the government has received requests to extend the services to more routes.
TGSRTC night buses gain commuter support
Officials will assess passenger demand before expanding the third shift services. They will also study traffic patterns on different routes.
In addition, officials will examine the requirements of each major corridor. The assessment will help determine where additional night services may be needed.
The government has not announced an expansion schedule for the services. Instead, officials will review the available data before taking a decision.
The initial seven day response has provided the corporation with early information on night travel demand. The 9,286 passengers recorded during the first week will form part of that assessment.
The services mainly target commuters who need public transport after regular operating hours. Employees and students form an important part of this group.
TGSRTC to assess demand before expansion
The government is now considering requests to extend the services to additional routes. However, the expansion will depend on route specific demand and traffic conditions.
Officials will study the requirements of different corridors before introducing more third shift services. This approach will help the corporation assess where late night buses can serve more passengers.
Meanwhile, the existing services will continue to operate on the six routes introduced on September 1. The response during the first week has highlighted demand for late night public transport in Greater Hyderabad.
