Hyderabad, July 2: Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS) leader K. Kavitha strongly criticised the Congress government after police arrested her and hundreds of party leaders, activists and Telangana movement supporters during a land rights protest in Boduppal on Wednesday.
Police detained the protesters during the agitation in the Uppal constituency and shifted Kavitha to Bollaram Police Station. The protest turned tense as police dispersed demonstrators, leading to allegations of a lathi charge.
Kavitha Alleges Police Excess During Land Rights Protest
Addressing the media from Bollaram Police Station, Kavitha alleged that police used excessive force against protesters, including women.
“Today, the blood of Telangana activists and women was shed in Uppal. It is unacceptable that the police resorted to a lathi charge without sparing women,” she alleged.
Kavitha said the protesters were only demanding that the Congress government honour its election promise of allotting 250 square yards of land to Telangana movement activists.
“We only asked the government to fulfil the assurance it made before the elections. Is it democracy to beat people with sticks when they seek implementation of those promises?” she questioned.
The BRS MLC further claimed that the protest would continue until the government fulfilled every commitment made to Telangana activists. She also warned that the “countdown” for the Congress government had begun, while asserting that she would continue the agitation on behalf of the activists.
Police have not immediately responded to the allegations of excessive force. Further details on the arrests and the protest are awaited.
