Internet, July 22: US President Donald Trump has approved a civil nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia, paving the way for long term collaboration in nuclear energy. The agreement is expected to remain in force for 30 years, subject to approval by the US Congress.
The proposed deal focuses on civilian nuclear energy and does not permit Saudi Arabia to develop nuclear weapons.
Under the agreement, the United States and Saudi Arabia will cooperate in establishing uranium enrichment facilities for civilian nuclear power generation. American companies are expected to make significant investments in the project, while the United States will oversee the implementation and operation of the programme.
According to the proposed framework, Saudi Arabia will be allowed to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, including nuclear fuel production for power plants. The agreement does not authorise the development of nuclear weapons.
The Trump administration is expected to submit the agreement to the US Congress for review and approval. Lawmakers are likely to examine its strategic and security implications before taking a final decision.
Saudi Arabia has long sought to develop a civilian nuclear energy programme as part of its efforts to diversify its energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The agreement also provides for the transfer of civilian nuclear technology and technical cooperation under US supervision.
Saudi Arabia is a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which monitors the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
