Hyderabad: A major reshuffle of the Union Cabinet is likely between June 15 and 18, with the BJP leadership expected to make significant changes in the government and party organisation ahead of key Assembly elections.
According to party sources, more than a dozen ministers could either lose their positions or receive new portfolios. The proposed exercise is expected to affect several Cabinet ministers and Ministers of State as the party prepares for electoral battles in states such as Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.
Sources indicated that at least two Cabinet ministers and three Ministers of State may exit the government. In addition, one senior Cabinet minister is likely to be assigned a major organisational role in a politically important southern state.
Union Cabinet Reshuffle May Expand NDA Representation
The Union Cabinet reshuffle is also expected to strengthen the representation of NDA allies. Sources said parties such as the Janata Dal United, Telugu Desam Party, Nationalist Congress Party and Rashtriya Lok Morcha could receive additional ministerial berths.
While most alliance partners may secure representation at the Minister of State level, one or two leaders could be inducted into the Cabinet. The BJP is reportedly focusing on regional balance, caste representation and electoral strategy while finalising the changes.
The reshuffle comes amid ongoing organisational changes within the BJP. Recently, Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary was appointed BJP president for Uttar Pradesh. Similarly, Harsh Malhotra was named the new Delhi BJP chief.
Party leaders expect their ministerial responsibilities to be assigned to new faces from either House of Parliament.
Several Ministries May See New Leadership
Sources said the reshuffle could result in changes across 10 to 12 ministries. Key departments under review reportedly include Railways, Finance, Corporate Affairs, Coal, Textiles, Information and Broadcasting, Electronics and Information Technology, Rural Development, Agriculture, Jal Shakti, Environment, Cooperation, Fisheries and Law.
Some ministries currently handled as additional responsibilities may receive dedicated Cabinet ministers.
The BJP is also expected to appoint a new state president in Karnataka. Reports suggest that a serving Cabinet minister could take charge of the party unit in the state. The party is also preparing to announce a new BJP president for Manipur.
Sources further indicated that the BJP may facilitate Cabinet representation for Manipur through the Rajya Sabha.
Focus on Youth and Organisational Strengthening
Several ministers whose Rajya Sabha terms are nearing completion may be moved to organisational responsibilities. In addition, leaders above the age of 70 are reportedly under review as part of efforts to create opportunities for younger faces within the government.
Party insiders also indicated that some BJP Morcha leaders could enter the Union Cabinet for the first time based on their organisational experience and performance.
There is also speculation that one Cabinet minister from Bihar could be replaced by another leader from the same social group to maintain electoral balance in the state.
Although the BJP has not officially confirmed the reshuffle, political observers view the proposed changes as part of a broader strategy to strengthen governance, improve regional representation and prepare for upcoming elections.
An official announcement is expected once the party leadership completes consultations with alliance partners and senior organisational leaders.
