Hyderabad: Uttar Dakshin delivered a rare jugalbandi of Hindustani and Carnatic music that enthralled the city on Saturday night. The 15th Season of the annual concert series, organised by Surmandal in association with Vivid Arts and Entertainment, took place at Ravindra Bharathi and drew an appreciative audience.

The evening featured an exceptional collaboration between renowned Hindustani vocalist Pandit Jayateerth Mevundi and globally acclaimed Carnatic flautist Vidwan Shashank Subramanyam. Pandit Jayateerth is celebrated for his powerful gayaki and deep rooted Jaipur Atrauli lineage. Meanwhile, Vidwan Shashank is known for his virtuosity and innovative approach to the bamboo flute. Together, they created a seamless musical dialogue that bridged two classical traditions.

Pandit Jayateerth performed with Sri Narahari on the tabla. At the same time, Vidwan Shashank received support from Vidwan Patri Satish Kumar on the mridangam. Their accompaniment built a strong rhythmic base for the concert. The programme began with the traditional lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest, the GM Corporate Communications, State Bank of India. Senior musician Sri Surendra Bharathi, Sri Satish Kochrekar from Fine Arts, and the performing artistes were present.

The musical journey opened with Raag Saraswati. This raga is popular in Carnatic music and later entered the Hindustani tradition. The artistes presented it in madhya laya and set it to Teen Taal and Aadi Taala. As a result, the performance reflected distinct rhythmic systems while complementing each other.

Later, Pandit Jayateerth elaborated Raag Puriya Kalyan. Vidwan Shashank complemented it with Raaga Purvi Kalyani on the flute. They presented this segment in Rupak Taal and then moved to faster Teen Taal and Aadi Taala. This portion stood out as one of the highlights of the evening.

Thereafter, Pandit Jayateerth offered a solo rendition of Raag Jog in madhya laya. He concluded with the bandish “Saajan More Ghar Aaye” in drut laya. Vidwan Shashank then presented Raaga Kumudakriya and rendered “Ardhanareshwaram,” composed by Muthuswamy Dikshitar.

On the eve of Maha Shivarathri, the artistes heightened the devotional mood with “Shambho Shiv Shambho,” composed by Swami Dayananda Teertha. The concert reached a powerful crescendo. Finally, they concluded with “Jo Bhaje Hari Ko Sada” in Raaga Bhairavi, composed by Saint Brahmanand. The performance left the audience spellbound.
