Hyderabad, May 5: White House lockdown after shooting near National Mall triggered a brief security alert in Washington, D.C. on Monday. United States Secret Service officers shot an armed suspect following an exchange of gunfire near the White House complex.
The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. when plainclothes agents noticed a suspicious individual carrying what appeared to be a firearm. Officials said the suspect came under observation near the outer perimeter of the White House.

According to Deputy Director Matt Quinn, officers approached the suspect, who briefly fled on foot. However, the individual then drew a weapon and fired towards agents. In response, security personnel returned fire and shot the suspect.
Authorities shifted the injured suspect to a hospital, but they have not disclosed his condition. Meanwhile, a juvenile bystander sustained injuries during the exchange. Officials clarified that the injuries were not life threatening and the child is receiving treatment.
The shooting took place near 15th Street and Independence Avenue, a short distance from the White House. Following the incident, Secret Service personnel imposed a temporary lockdown and moved reporters from the North Lawn indoors.

However, the lockdown was lifted within minutes after the situation came under control. Donald Trump continued with a scheduled event at the East Room shortly after the incident.
Officials stated that there is no immediate evidence suggesting the suspect targeted the president or the White House. They added that investigations will determine the motive behind the attack.
Additionally, authorities confirmed that a weapon was recovered from the scene. The Metropolitan Police Department has taken charge of the investigation into the use of force.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in the US capital. Recently, another security breach during a public event raised questions about safety measures in high security zones.
Officials reiterated that security agencies remain on high alert. They assured that all necessary steps will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
