5.0 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Himachal Pradesh, Tremors Felt in North India

Hyderabad, June 6: A 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Kangra Chamba region of Himachal Pradesh on Friday night, triggering panic among residents and sending people rushing out of their homes.

The earthquake occurred at around 10:30 pm near the Kangra Chamba border, approximately 40 kilometres from Dharamsala.

Himachal Pradesh Earthquake Triggers Panic

According to the Meteorological Department, the earthquake had a depth of 5 kilometres, with its epicentre located near Dhar Godoi in Kangra district.

Tremors were felt across Kangra, Chamba and adjoining districts of Himachal Pradesh. Residents in Dharamsala and nearby areas reported experiencing moderate shaking that lasted for a few seconds.

Officials said no loss of life or property damage had been reported from any part of the state till late Friday night.

The Kangra and Chamba districts fall under Seismic Zone V, one of the country’s highest earthquake risk zones, making the region vulnerable to strong seismic activity.

Apart from Himachal Pradesh, tremors were also felt in Chandigarh and several parts of the states of Punjab and Haryana.

A Chandigarh resident said he experienced mild tremors while preparing to sleep, adding that the shaking lasted only a few seconds.

Authorities are monitoring the situation, and no reports of injuries or significant damage have emerged so far.
