Hyderabad, June 2: The Telangana government has granted amnesty to 92 prisoners serving sentences in various jails across the state on the occasion of Telangana State Formation Day.
The government issued official orders for the release of eligible inmates as Telangana completed 12 years as a separate state and entered its 13th year.
According to the orders, the decision was taken after considering factors such as the prisoners’ conduct, age, health condition, and overall behavior during their incarceration.
Of the 92 prisoners selected for release, 86 are men and six are women.
Officials said the amnesty will apply to eligible prisoners lodged in different prisons across Telangana. The move has been taken as a humanitarian measure to mark the State Formation Day celebrations.
The families of the prisoners welcomed the government’s decision and expressed happiness over the announcement.
Prison department officials are expected to complete the necessary formalities and release process in the coming days.
The Telangana government has periodically considered remission and special amnesty measures on significant occasions, taking into account legal provisions and recommendations from prison authorities.
