Wildlife officials warn of heavy metals like nitrates and molybdenum contaminating the moats, posing a serious health risk to over 2,000 animals. These pollutants can cause kidney and other debilitating diseases.

The contaminated water not only flows directly into the zoo but also seeps into the surrounding groundwater, raising concerns for a wider ecological impact. Tragically, this issue has already claimed lives.

During 2018-19, about 58 animals succumbed to liver cirrhosis linked to the polluted water. This includes beloved residents like the Asiatic lioness Aruna, the endangered Himalayan goral, the mute swan Madhumati, and a ring-necked parakeet.

Recognizing the urgency, Chief Wildlife Warden Mohan Pargaien has appealed to the government for immediate action. He proposes integrating sewage treatment plants into the zoo’s infrastructure as part of the ongoing Musi Riverfront project.

Pargaien emphasizes the need for two such plants – one near the Tiger Safari and another by the pool area. He urges authorities to prioritize incorporating these measures into the Musi Riverfront development plan or explore alternative funding solutions to ensure the well-being of the zoo’s diverse inhabitants.
