Hyderabad Steps Up Basti Sanitation with Focused Weekly Action Plan

Hyderabad, April 15: (Maxim News) The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner has implemented a comprehensive weekly action plan to tackle waste management challenges in basti (slum) areas. This initiative prioritizes achieving 100% door-to-door collection of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and eliminating Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs).

A Week-by-Week Breakdown for Effective Sanitation:

Day 1: Basti Meetings – Launch the week with meetings involving Self-Help Group (SHG) members, enabling open communication and collaboration.

Day 2: Identifying Gaps – Conduct surveys to pinpoint households currently not serviced by Sanitation Auto Tippers (SATs).
Day 3: Community Rallies – Organize rallies across Basti areas to raise awareness about proper waste disposal and the importance of the action plan.
Day 4: Motivational Programs – Educate and inspire residents through motivational programs that promote cleanliness and responsible waste management practices.
Day 5: Rangoli for Engagement – Foster community spirit and a sense of ownership through Rangoli art creation events, using colored powders to beautify public spaces.
Day 6: Town Vending Committee Meetings – Facilitate meetings with Town Vending Committees (TVCs) to address waste management concerns specific to street vendors in Basti areas.
Day 7: Pledges and Resolutions – Conclude the week with a weekend program where residents take public pledges and solidify their commitment to a cleaner and healthier environment.

Measurable Progress and Community Involvement:

The plan has yielded significant results so far. Over 1631 meetings have been conducted, actively engaging SHGs, SAT drivers, and Sanitation Link Fellows (SLFs). By linking 197,891 households to SATs, the initiative has substantially improved door-to-door garbage collection, exceeding the initial target of 154,954 households in Basti areas.

Furthermore, outreach efforts through rallies, motivational programs, and Rangoli events have successfully engaged over 5,798 citizens. Additionally, Town Vending Committee meetings have played a crucial role in integrating street vendors into the waste management system.

The commitment of SHG workers is commendable, with 1631 awareness meetings specifically focused on tackling GVPs. Recognizing their dedication, the plan also incorporates initiatives to honor these valuable contributors. (Maxim News)
