HYDRA Commissioner Clarifies On Demolition Policy

Hyderabad: In response to public concerns, HYDRA Commissioner AV Ranganath has issued a statement clarifying the agency’s demolition policy. He reassured citizens that no occupied houses or residences, even if built in the Full Tank Level (FTL) or buffer zones of lakes, would be demolished. “Habitations or dwellings occupied by people will NOT be demolished,” Ranganath emphasized.

The Commissioner elaborated on the ongoing demolition drives, which are focused on new and unauthorized constructions within FTL and buffer zones.”The structures demolished today in Madhapur’s Sunnam Cheruvu and Dundigal’s Mallampet Cheruvu were all under construction and lacked proper permissions. These violate FTL/buffer zone regulations,” he said.

HYDRA demolition in Ameenpur

In Ameenpur, HYDRA demolished compound walls, sheds, and rooms that had been encroached upon by former MLA Katasani Rambhupal Reddy. Additionally, commercial sheds and hotels that were being used for business in Sunnam Cheruvu were also cleared as they were illegally constructed within the FTL.

In Mallampet, Dundigal, seven villas were demolished, all of which were still under construction and had no building permissions. The builder behind these constructions, identified as Vijay Lakshmi,” has multiple criminal cases against her and is reportedly connected to local political leaders.

We have demolished illegal structures in Sunnam Cheruvu previously, but they re-emerged, which is why we took action again today. Criminal cases have been booked against both Vijay Lakshmi and former MLA Katasani Rambhupal Reddy,” Ranganath noted.

HYDRA Commissioner’s Message To People

Addressing the broader issue of lake encroachments, the Commissioner urged the public not to purchase properties in FTL or buffer zones. “We request people not to buy any house, flat, or land in these areas. If there are any doubts, they can check the HMDA lakes website or approach HYDRAA for clarification,” he advised.

Ranganath further detailed the typical process of lake encroachment, which often begins with the dumping of construction debris, followed by the development of temporary structures or businesses. Over time, permanent buildings emerge, ultimately leading to the disappearance of lakes from Hyderabad’s map. In the case of today’s demolitions in Sunnam Cheruvu, a local individual named Gopal was found to be running illegal businesses and collecting rents on encroached land. A criminal case has been filed against him.
