Potential Cyclone Brewing in Bay of Bengal: IMD Warns of Heavy Rains, Gusty Winds in Coastal States

Hyderabad, May 28 (Maxim News): A low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal, sparking concerns that it could intensify into a cyclone in the coming days. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the formation of the system at 10:30 AM on Wednesday and issued an alert about its strengthening trend.

According to the IMD, the low-pressure zone is currently positioned off the coast of Odisha and is showing signs of intensifying. Satellite imagery released by the department indicates that the system is steadily gaining strength and is expected to develop into a depression by the evening of May 29.

Weather officials forecast that the depression will drift northward, moving towards the area between West Bengal and Bangladesh. However, there’s a possibility that the system may shift direction and approach the Andhra Pradesh coast by May 31, raising the potential for more direct impact.

Authorities have warned of possible rainfall accompanied by gusty winds ranging between 35 to 50 km/h across the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Telangana. The IMD has advised fishermen in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha to avoid venturing into the sea until June 1 as the situation remains uncertain.

The exact path and intensity of the system will become clearer by May 30,” IMD officials stated, adding that while the depression could potentially evolve into a cyclone, the final determination will depend on how the system behaves over the next 48 hours.

This development comes at a crucial time, as the southwest monsoon has already begun making its way across the Indian subcontinent. Meteorologists warn that if the system matures into a cyclone during the ongoing monsoon expansion, it could result in extremely heavy rainfall in several regions.

The next five days are critical. Residents in vulnerable areas are urged to stay alert and follow updates from the IMD. Emergency services and disaster response teams have been asked to remain on standby as the system continues to evolve. (Maxim News)
