ECI Begins Process To Elect New Vice President After Dhankhar’s Resignation

Delhi/Hyderabad, July 23 (Maxim News): The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially initiated the process to elect a new Vice President of India, following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down citing health concerns.

Dhankhar submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu on July 21, and the Ministry of Home Affairs, through a Gazette Notification (S.O.3354(E)) dated July 22, 2025, confirmed the acceptance of his resignation.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the ECI said that it is mandated under Article 324 of the Constitution to conduct the election for the Vice President’s post. The commission added that it has already commenced preparatory work for the Vice Presidential Elections 2025.

Election Framework in Place

The election for the Vice President is held in accordance with:

  • The Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, and
  • The Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974.

“The Commission has begun all necessary preparations and will announce the full election schedule shortly after completing procedural formalities,” said an ECI official.

What Happens Next?

The Election Commission is expected to soon release an official notification detailing:

  • The date of election
  • Nomination deadlines
  • Scrutiny and withdrawal timelines
  • Voting and counting schedule

Until a new Vice President is elected, constitutional arrangements and protocols will be followed to ensure continuity of duties in the Rajya Sabha, where the Vice President serves as the ex-officio Chairperson.
