The state government has imposed rules that locality will be applicable only if students have studied in Telangana for four consecutive years before writing the NEEt exam.  The Telangana High Court had ruled last year that these rules were invalid.

The Telangana government has challenged the High Court verdict in the Supreme Court.  Last year, the Telangana government had given exemption to the petitioners.   This year, students have filed petitions in the Supreme Court seeking exemption from the locality rules for them as well. The students have stated in the petition that even though they were born in Telangana and studied upto class 10, they are not getting the local quota.  Telangana students have explained to the Supreme Court that they are losing out by not getting the local quota in NEEt because they did not study in Classes 11 and 12.
