Delhi/Hyderabad, July 23 (Maxim News): The Union Government’s ambitious rooftop solar initiative is making significant strides, with over 15.45 lakh households across India, including 5.23 lakh in Gujarat alone, having benefitted from the scheme as of July 14, 2025, Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik informed Parliament.
The update was shared in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, highlighting the impact of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in February 2024, which aims to provide free electricity through rooftop solar power systems.
Key Highlights:
- 15.45 lakh households across India have installed rooftop solar systems.
- 5.23 lakh beneficiaries are from Gujarat, including rural regions.
- The scheme is demand-driven and accessible to all residential consumers with a grid-connected electricity connection.
- Online applications can be made via the National Portal for the scheme.
Model Solar Villages & Financial Incentives:
One notable component of the scheme is the development of “Model Solar Villages” in every district of the country. A total of ₹800 crore has been allocated for this initiative, with ₹1 crore in Central Financial Assistance (CFA) allocated per village.
Furthermore, the scheme encourages local governance participation. It offers:
- ₹1,000 incentive per rooftop installation to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs) within their jurisdictions.
Ease of Access and Financial Support:
To boost adoption and streamline the process, the government has implemented several measures:
- Online processing from registration to direct subsidy transfer to consumer bank accounts.
- Collateral-free loans from nationalized banks at concessional interest rates (Repo rate + 0.5%, currently 6% p.a.) for 10-year tenures.
- Simplified regulatory approvals, including:
- Waiver of technical feasibility studies.
- Auto load enhancement up to 10 kW.
Goal by March 2027:
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana aims to achieve rooftop solar installations in one crore households across the country by March 2027, promoting clean energy, reducing electricity bills, and encouraging self-reliance in energy generation.
