The SIR, which was recently carried out in Bihar, had sparked major political controversy after opposition parties accused the EC of election manipulation. They alleged that large-scale rigging took place under the guise of voter list revision. However, the Election Commission firmly denied these charges, emphasizing that the main goal of the process is to remove illegal immigrants and maintain the integrity of the electoral rolls.

Officials clarified that the Special Intensive Revision is being implemented across the country in a phased manner. The EC said that similar exercises will follow in other states in preparation for upcoming elections. With assembly elections scheduled in 2026 for Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, the Commission stated that updating the voter lists is an important step to ensure clean and transparent electoral rolls.

The EC confirmed that the SIR process in Bihar has already been completed, and the final voters’ list containing 7.472 crore names was published on September 30. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar explained that the work to revise and verify voter records in all states is already underway. He also noted that the final decision on when to start the process in each state will rest with the Election Commission.

By taking up this large-scale verification process, the EC aims to create updated and accurate voter databases across India. The exercise is intended to prevent duplication, remove ineligible names, and strengthen public trust in the democratic process ahead of the next elections.
