New York/Internet/Hyderabad, Nov 5 (Maxim News): In a major victory for the Democratic Party, Hyderabadi-born Ghazala Hashmi has been elected as the new Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, defeating Republican candidate John Reid by a landslide. Her win marks another milestone for Indian-origin representation in American politics, following Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral victory in New York City.

Ghazala Hashmi represents Virginia’s 15th Senatorial District and has become the first Muslim and the first South Asian American to serve in the Virginia Senate. Her election as Lieutenant Governor reflects a growing recognition of diversity and inclusion in mainstream American politics. The Democrats showcased their strength in this election cycle, registering key victories in contests that were closely watched nationwide.

Born in 1964 in Hyderabad, India, Ghazala Hashmi is the daughter of Zia Hashmi and Tanveer Hashmi. She spent her early years in Malpet at her grandmother’s home before migrating to the United States at the age of four, along with her mother and brother. Her father pursued higher education in international affairs and later worked as a university professor. Ghazala completed her Bachelor of Arts in Honors from Georgia Southern University and later earned a PhD in literature from Emory University in Atlanta.

After her marriage, Ghazala moved to the Richmond area of Virginia in 1991, where she served as a professor at Reynolds Community College for three decades. Her political journey began in 2019, when she won her first election to the Virginia Senate. In 2024, she was elected as the Chairperson of the Senate Education and Health Committee, representing the Democratic Party. Known for her advocacy in education, social equity, and community development, her career reflects a deep commitment to public service.

Ghazala Hashmi’s victory in Virginia is being hailed as a proud moment for both the Indian diaspora and the city of Hyderabad. Her ascent to one of the highest offices in Virginia underscores the growing influence of Indian-origin leaders in American governance and the continued success of women in politics worldwide.
