Should Intruders Be Recognized As Voters Just Because They Have Aadhar? Supreme Court
Delhi/Hyderabad, Nov 27 (Maxim News) The Supreme Court has expressed concern over the infiltrators obtaining Aadhaar cards. Should non-citizens of this country be given the right to vote just because they have an Aadhaar card? The Supreme Court asked. It said that Aadhaar is only useful for reaching the people of welfare schemes and that Aadhaar card is not a valid proof of citizenship of the country.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Suryakant is hearing petitions challenging the Election Commission’s decision to conduct Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in several states. The bench clarified that the Aadhaar Act does not confer citizenship or domicile.
The court also directed that a notice be given before depriving a person of the right to vote. It clarified that the Election Commission has the power to decide whether to grant voting rights or not based on the documents submitted along with the application for inclusion of their name in the electoral roll. It said that the Election Commission is not a post office.
The Supreme Court also fixed a schedule for hearing petitions filed in the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal specifically challenging the SIR. The bench asked the Election Commission to file its responses by December 1. It said that the petitioners can file their arguments and these matters will come up for hearing soon. (Maxim News)
