Sankranti toll relief: Telangana govt plans toll-free travel on highways
Sankranti toll relief | Hyderabad, Dec. 30: The Telangana government is set to bring festive cheer to passengers travelling to their native places during the Sankranti festival.
The state is considering a major decision to provide toll fee relief on national highways, aiming to ensure smoother and faster travel during the peak festive rush.
A key meeting regarding the proposal was held at the Telangana Secretariat on Monday, and an official announcement is expected by evening.
The primary objective of the move is to reduce heavy traffic congestion, especially at toll plazas on the Hyderabad–Vijayawada National Highway (NH-65), where frequent bottlenecks are reported at Pantangi and Korlapadu toll plazas during festival seasons.
Sankranti toll relief | Government may bear toll charges
According to sources, the Telangana government is planning to bear the toll charges on behalf of passengers travelling during the Sankranti holidays.
This step is expected to significantly ease traffic flow and help commuters reach their destinations without long delays.
If implemented, the decision will benefit thousands of travellers heading towards districts such as Adilabad, Karimnagar, Mahabubnagar, Warangal, and routes connecting to Vijayawada.
Officials believe that toll-free or reduced toll travel during the festival period will also help prevent traffic jams caused by long queues at toll plazas.
However, since toll collection on national highways falls under the purview of the central government, approval from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is mandatory. In this regard, Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy is expected to write to the Union Ministry soon, requesting toll concession or complete exemption during the Sankranti festival days.
Awaiting Centre’s approval:
State government officials are optimistic that the Centre will respond positively to the request. Once approval is granted, the initiative is expected to bring major relief to commuters and improve overall traffic management during the festive period.
With Sankranti being one of the biggest festivals in Telangana, the proposed toll relief is seen as a people-friendly move by the state government.
Travellers are hopeful that the decision will be implemented quickly, allowing them to reach their hometowns comfortably and safely.
