The ECI has already completed the first phase of the SIR process in Bihar. At present, the second phase is underway in nine states and three Union Territories across the country. In this phase, states such as Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh have reached the final stages of revision.

In the backdrop of the progress made in these states, the Election Commission has decided to take up the third phase of SIR, which will include Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and a few other states, officials said.

The Special Intensive Revision exercise is aimed at ensuring accuracy and transparency in electoral rolls, including the removal of duplicate and ineligible names and the inclusion of eligible voters.

However, it may be noted that the proposed SIR process has drawn strong objections from opposition parties, who have raised concerns over its implementation and possible impact on voters.
