US Senators Urge Trump To Take Steps To Reduce India’s Tariffs On Pulses
Washington/internet/Hyderabad (Maxim News): An interesting development has taken place as bilateral trade talks between India and the US continue, US senators have urged president Trump to reduce the 30% tariff imposed by India on US pulses. Senators Steve Dines of Montana and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota wrote a letter to Trump on January 16 in this regard.
According to this letter, The states of Montana and North Dakota are at the top in the production of pulses, especially peas, India is the world’s largest consumer of these crops. India’s share in the world’s consumption of pulses is about 27%. Pulses like lentils, chickpeas, dried beans, peas are commonly consumed by Indians. These are imported from the United States.
However, now India is imposing heavy tariffs on these products. On October 30 last year, India imposed a 30% tariff on yellow peas imported from the US. It was implemented from November 1. These tariffs are severely hurting American pulse producers. “Immediately discuss the pulse tariffs with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reach an agreement acceptable to both countries,” the senators advised Trump.
