Hyderabad: Rising Vehicle Prices in Telangana are set to take effect from March 1 as the Transport Department issued orders to collect a road safety tax on new vehicles. The move will impact buyers registering vehicles across the state.
The Congress government is set to implement regulations to levy a security tax, also called Road Safety Cess, on vehicles purchased from March 1 in Telangana. According to the orders, officials will collect this amount at the time of registration. Therefore, buyers must factor in the additional cost while purchasing new vehicles.
Road Safety Cess to Apply on New Vehicles in Telangana
Under the new rules, cars, autos carrying passengers, and other non transport vehicles must pay between ₹2,000 and ₹10,000 as road safety tax. The Transport Department has clearly stated that authorities will collect this tax during registration. Meanwhile, the range depends on the category of the vehicle, as specified in the issued orders.
Estimates suggest that the Road Safety Cess will generate ₹270 crore in annual revenue. The government expects this revenue to support road safety measures. However, the input does not specify further details on allocation or usage.
Transport Department Orders Mandate Tax at Registration
The Transport Department has formally issued orders regarding the collection process. As per the directive, officials will ensure that the road safety tax is paid at the time of vehicle registration. Therefore, the new levy becomes mandatory for all eligible vehicles purchased from March 1 onward.
The decision comes as part of the Congress government’s plan to regulate vehicle related revenue through a structured cess. Meanwhile, the measure directly affects buyers of cars, passenger autos, and other non transport vehicles in Telangana. Later, authorities are expected to enforce the collection strictly as per the orders issued.

With the Rising Vehicle Prices in Telangana taking effect from March 1, new vehicle buyers will see an increase in upfront costs. The implementation of the Road Safety Cess marks a significant regulatory step by the state government.
