However, the Congress Party had already opened a new office last year. The new premises, located on Kotla Marg, operate under the name Indira Bhavan. Despite this shift, reports suggest that the old Akbar Road office is still in use. Therefore, the government issued the latest notice to vacate the premises.

Meanwhile, the Akbar Road building has long served as the All India Congress Committee headquarters. It holds significant political and historical importance. The building has witnessed key moments in the party’s journey over several decades.

Further, the property has a history that dates back to the pre independence era. It was once used as the residence of British Viceroy Sir Reginald Maxwell. Later, it also served as the residence of Myanmar Ambassador Daw Khin Kyaw. His daughter, Aung San Suu Kyi, spent her childhood in the same house.

After her defeat in 1977, Indira Gandhi continued her political activities from this building. The premises then became a central hub for the party. Over time, several prominent leaders operated from this office.

Also, Rajiv Gandhi, PV Narasimha Rao, and Manmohan Singh rose to prominence while associated with this headquarters. The building, therefore, remains closely linked with the Congress Party’s leadership history.

The notice to vacate marks a major shift for the party’s long standing base. The development comes even as the party has already moved its main operations to Indira Bhavan. The situation now highlights the transition from the historic Akbar Road office to the new headquarters.
