Prime Minister Narendra Modi has clarified that the Lok Sabha Redistribution process will not reduce parliamentary seats for southern states. He said concerns that states with controlled population growth may lose representation are not correct.
Speaking at a meeting in Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta district during the Kerala Assembly election campaign, Modi addressed the issue directly. He stated that all states will benefit from the planned increase in Lok Sabha seats. Therefore, he rejected claims that southern states would face losses due to redistribution.
He said, “Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and other states have successfully controlled their population. Even though the population growth is low, the Lok Sabha seats of these states will not necessarily decrease,” he said. He added that Parliament will take steps to protect representation for southern states.
Meanwhile, Modi outlined plans to expand parliamentary representation. He said the Parliament session would be extended from 16–18 this month. This extension aims to enable constitutional amendments. These amendments will increase the number of seats in Parliament and state legislatures. He also said this move would support 33 percent reservation for women. As a result, Lok Sabha seats are expected to rise from 543 to 816.
The Prime Minister also spoke about India’s ties with Gulf countries. He said India maintains strong relations with them. He noted that Gulf countries consider Indians as family members. Therefore, he stressed that Indians living there, especially youth and women, should not face any problems.
In addition, Modi commented on political developments in Kerala. He said the countdown has begun to topple the LDF government. He added that the BJP-led NDA aims to come to power. He also said Kerala has strong potential but is lagging in development. He pointed to delays in the Sabari rail project as a concern for people in the Thiruvalla region.
Modi also criticized Congress leaders. He said their statements could harm India’s relations with Gulf nations. He warned that such comments could create tension during global conflicts. He said, “I want to tell the leaders of Congress, LDF and UDF something. Politics is politics. Elections come and go. For me, the safety of millions of Malayalis is my priority. I will be committed to that.”
His remarks come amid comments by Jairam Ramesh about possible seat reduction in southern states. The Prime Minister’s statement seeks to address those concerns and reassure voters.
