Hyderabad, August 9: Telangana DGP CV Anand said the drug menace has emerged as a major challenge for the state.
Speaking to the media in Warangal on Sunday, Anand said Maoist influence has declined sharply after the surrender of several leaders and cadres.
He recalled his early days as a trainee IPS officer in Warangal. He said people once feared leaving their homes because of Naxalite activity.
According to Anand, Maoism has steadily declined in Telangana since 2010. He said the situation has changed significantly due to sustained efforts by security agencies.
The DGP also referred to a programme planned in Mulugu involving surrendered Maoists. He said the government and police were working to support those who surrendered.
Drug menace now a major focus for Telangana police
Anand said officials have prepared an app to assist surrendered Maoists and victims affected by Maoist violence.
He also said officials had reviewed ex gratia payments for people who died between 1992 and 1996. According to him, some families received lower compensation.
The DGP said officials would bring the matter to the government’s attention. He added that efforts would be made to resolve eligible cases.
Meanwhile, Anand said the police were strengthening their response to narcotics-related offences. Teams from the Narcotics Bureau, Traffic wing and Crime Investigation Department are working together.
The teams are also visiting different districts to assess local problems and improve enforcement. The DGP said the coordinated approach would help police respond to emerging challenges.
Anand’s remarks indicate a shift in policing priorities as Maoist activity declines in the state. He identified narcotics as a growing concern that requires coordinated action.
Police officials are continuing field visits and reviews across Telangana. They are also examining measures to support surrendered Maoists and people affected by past extremist violence.
